Google Update | Panda, Penguin & Hummingbird Impact

Google update: Panda & quality content, Penguin & links, Hummingbird & in-depth information

Google update: General information

Google updates its Search Algorithm continuously to bring you the most relevant result based on the words you use to search for information.

As technology becomes better and Google becomes more aware of your thinking it endeavors to find better information for you.

Google update: Search algorithm

Every year, Google changes its search algorithm approximately 500–600 times.

Many of these changes are imperceptible. Major important algorithm updates are few and impact Search Results significantly.

3 recent updates that have changed Search Engine Result Page (SERP) rankings are:

1. Google Panda
2. Google Penguin
3. Google Hummingbird

The consequences of these updates will impact your website pages in major ways.

You can monitor the impact on your traffic using Google Analytics or Google Webmaster Tools.

Other minor changes will also appear to effect your page traffic but may not be easily discernible.

On Google Analytics you can mark the date of the updates to see how your traffic is being affected. This will help you to improve your content optimization.

1. Google update: Panda

Panda attacks low quality web pages.

The latest change to Google’s ‘book review’ Panda 4.0 is the most recent change to Google’s algorithm. The ‘book review’ determines which pages will feature in search results and how highly they will rank.

These updates, along with many smaller iterations, are a measurement of the search engine’s armory as it seeks to improve its capacity to present searchers more relevant content.

Through categorizing the mainly important results, the almost poor quality ones and the Spammy content lower down in the results pages.

The first Panda update was introduced in February 2011 and successive Pandas, along with another algorithm update have hit the search rankings of several sites.

These pages did not pass Google’s quality analysis with distressing effect.

The major Panda 2.0 update led to a sudden ranking drop of many pages and websites.

2. Google update: Penguin

Google launched the Penguin Update in April 2012 to penalize sites that were manipulating inbound links.

These sites were buying links or getting them through link networks mostly to improve their Search Result rankings.

Google transferred the responsibility of removing them to the site owner. This increased pressure on the site Webmaster to be more careful with inbound links.

When a new Penguin Update is released, sites that have taken action to remove bad links e.g. through the Google disavow links tool or to remove spam may regain rankings.

New sites not previously caught might get trapped by Penguin. “False positives,” sites that were caught by mistake, may escape.

Maybe Penguin?

It may not be very easy to pinpoint the impact of Penguin on your SERP rankings.

Penguin refreshes are rolled out gradually. Also SPAM algorithm updates have been made and have impacted rankings.

3. Google update: Hummingbird

If the idea that SEO is dead crosses your mind or turns up in print, dismiss it.

The fact is that nothing is really going to change in the way that we pursue the almighty ranking.

Hummingbird has helped with the resurgence of the long tail keyword. Everything that worked before Hummingbird’s release will still work to move forward. This includes:

  • Unique and attractive content are still king
  • Genuine back links that are earned using proper SEO are still important
  • The equivalent signals that worked earlier will get results
  • Keywords are still important to help guide you towards demanded content

The only thing that is changing in a noticeable way is the way Google’s new algorithm interprets the way we search.
